Whole-Body Approach to Fertility

Fertility is a common concern that I see in my practice. When I meet with a new patient that is concerned with reproductive health, I find there are a few key patterns that, when addressed, can most definitely help fertility. Of course, these tips go along with a complete hormonal and nutritional consult:

Exercise: while exercise is great for cardiovascular health, building muscle, weight control and stress reduction, in the case of fertility, there can be too much of a good thing. The body perceives intense physical activity as a stress and in doing so, certain hormones can become imbalanced that are needed for pregnancy achievement. It is best to balance physical activity to include relaxing or restorative movement, such as hatha yoga, qi gong, stretching, or walking. Find physical activity that energizes, not depletes!

Relaxation: undoubtedly, the mind has influence over the body especially in conception. Recent research has shown that women who undergo talk therapy or attend support groups while trying to conceive have better success rates than those who do not. Meditation, spirituality, or support groups are just a few of the options. Make time to relax, think positively and optimistically about your goal.

Quality nutrition: what would you be eating, drinking and supplementing if you were pregnant? What do you want your child to eat after they are born and weaned? Start living that nutritional philosophy now! Your nutritional habits take time to change and should be optimized during the pre-conception period. Men should also consider their nutrition to be sure that they are producing healthy, viable sperm. It is also a great way to start building routines and partnership as a family.

I am so happy for the (now) mothers I have helped over the years achieve their pregnancy goals! I look forward to helping many more.

If you are what you eat, what are you? I actually If you are what you eat, what are you?

I actually used to obsess over what I ate. That wasn’t a long term solution for good nutrition, so I’ve learned how to eat what makes me feel good and is health promoting.

🥕 Eat Your Veggies. Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you need to eat heavy, high fat processed foods. Explore recipes like hearty vegetable soups, roasted vegetables, and omega 3 rich foods.

🏂 Go Outside. Exercise inside is fantastic, but don’t let that keep you from a brisk walk outside.

🤗 Keep Social. Social interaction is important for your mood. Make sure to keep your social engagements even if you don’t feel like leaving your house. You will be glad you did.
